Camp Sky-Wa-Mo Reopens

Johnson City, Tennessee (June 27, 2011): The Tri-Cities’ largest Girl Scout camp is reopening on a limited basis. By mid-July, Girl Scouts will again be enjoying Camp Sky-Wa-Mo, located near Bluff City.

The Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians kept the camp closed this spring to conduct a property evaluation. The camp’s structures were built between the 1940s and 1980s, and their conditions vary widely. All need some degree of repair.

A consultant from the national organization will work with the Council to develop a long-range property plan for the Bluff City camp and all council properties. All adult and girl members will have multiple opportunities to engage in that process which will take approximately nine to ten months.

In the meantime, the camp will be available for day-use and overnight tent and primitive camping by troops, service units and other Girl Scout groups.  Due to ongoing repair needs and in order to preserve resources for use as indicated by the long-range property plan, some buildings and program facilities will remain closed.

Girls will be camping at Sky-Wa-Mo again beginning July 11. Troops may register by calling 1-800-474-1912.
