The Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians had a great year at the 32nd Annual Hiwassee River Raft Race!
This year fourteen rafts had nearly perfect weather for the annual run down the Hiwassee River on their homemade floats. The rafts were built using lashing and knot-tying skills, bamboo, and inflatable tubes. Each raft had only girls or adults respectively on it and had to be constructed using only natural materials for the platforms of the raft.
The river was running strong on Saturday and the fastest raft, the “SS Minnows,” finished in just over an hour and a half winning the Fastest Time award. Awards are also given for Best Theme, Best Girl Scout Skills, and Hard Luck. The Tennessee Valley Canoe Club, through their longtime partnership with Girl Scouts of the Southern Appalachians, provided experienced safety boaters for each raft. As always, they had just as much fun on the river as the girls!
