At our annual Trefoil Society Luncheons, we recognize women in our council area who are either Girl Scout alums and/or have exemplified our mission to be women of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
This year at our Kingsport luncheon on Thursday, August 30, we will honor local leader Claudia Byrd.
Claudia has served as executive director of the Bristol Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities for over 20 years. The non-profit provides funding for children’s-based nonprofit organizations in 18 counties surrounding the Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway. In 2016, the organization awarded a record-breaking $1,000,000 to regional children’s charities and their 19-year total is over $13 million in grants awarded locally!
As executive director, a position she’s s held since the chapter was founded in 1997, Claudia oversees the organization’s annual grant application process and works closely with the local board of trustees to coordinate fundraising events.
A Winston-Salem, North Carolina native and Wake Forrest graduate, Claudia has a long history of board membership and involvement in a variety of organizations dedicated to serving children, youth and their families. She currently serves as a member of the East Tennessee State University Foundation Board, and is a former member of the Roan Steering Committee and the Kingsport Community Foundation Board. Claudia is past president of the Rotary Club of Kingsport, Tennessee, and an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Kingsport. Claudia also has served on several state boards and committees.
Claudia was married to the late Jeff Byrd, the long-time Bristol Motor Speedway president and general manager, for 36 years. She is the mother of Belton and Christian and proud grandmother to eight beautiful grandchildren.
