Arts & Culture

Barter Theatre

Barter Theatre, the state theatre of Virginia, offers discounted tickets to Girl Scout groups of 15 or more. Troop members will receive the student rate and no service charges. Special adult pricing is also available for adult attending with the group. This discount offer applies to all performances and at both Barter Theatre stages. Groups must book in advance. Barter also offers downloadable study guides for student groups, workshops, tours, and one-on-one talkbacks with the actors as add-on options.

Barter Theatre also offers badge workshops with teaching artists that will come to your troop meeting. Workshops are offered through Project REAL, Reinforcing Learning through Artistic Learning. REAL can help girls earn the following badge categories in all grade levels: Artist, Citizen, Healthy Living, Performance, Science and Technology, Storytelling, Do It Yourself, Practical Life Skills, Creative Play, Innovation, and Manners.

The Bead Social

Girls get a hands-on and fun learning experience in the art of jewelry making with the Bead Social. Juniors can even earn their Jeweler badge! Classes can be booked for 90-minutes or 3-hour increments. For groups larger than 10, please contact for info about accommodations.

Blount Mansion

Blount Mansion offers tours and Playing the Past badge workshops.

Bush Brothers

Visit the Bush Bean's Visitor's Center and learn about this century-old family business. Walk through a giant bean can, learn your weight in beans, take home a souvenir picture, and see a film of how Bush's products are made. You can also visit the general store, and enjoy homemade dishes in the café.

The Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center

The Heritage Center offers docent-led museum tours as well as various hands-on activities such as playing authentic pioneer games, participating in a simulated archaeology dig, and using traditional Native American weaponry. Advanced registration is required for docent-led tours and activities. Self-guided tours are also available.

The Knoxville Museum of Art

The Knoxville Museum of Art offers educational programs and events to Girl Scouts of all ages. Volunteers can schedule a docent-guided tour of KMA’s exhibitions or an art workshop that meets requirements for the following badges: Potter, Jeweler, Book Artist, Textile Artist, Painting, Drawing, Comics, Collage, Photographer, and many more.  A minimum of 12 girls is needed for a workshop.

Knoxville Symphony Orchestra

The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra will provide discount tickets to groups of 10 or more to include 20 percent off of adult ticket prices, Girl Scouts admitted at the student rate, and no service charges.  This applies for any KSO concert in the Masterworks, Chamber Classics, or Pops Series. Tickets must be reserved in advance.

Rocky Mount Museum - Playing the Past badge

Earn your Playing the Past badge at Rocky Mount State Historic Site by living life as a girl living on America’s first frontier in the year 1791. Experience firsthand how the early settlers worked and played. Use a quill pen to record your story, and create costume accessories and other crafts to take home. This program takes about four hours.

Scenic City Clay Arts

Brownies can earn all the components of the Potter badge. Girls will start with making their own pinch pot, creating an art piece, see the pottery process, then glaze and take home their own piece! Workshop taught by professional potters. Juniors can earn all the components of the Jeweler badge. They will learn about tools, incorporate clay, metal, and beads into cultural jewelry - inspired by all the diverse cultures around us.

Community Service

ETSU College of Nursing

The ETSU College of Nursing offers Girl Scouts of all ages two sites in Johnson City for them to learn and practice community gardening skills. Girls can work at the Johnson City Community Health Center and the JCCHC/Johnson City Housing Authority Partners for Health Clinic. Juniors can work on the Gardener badge, and Seniors can work on the Sow What? Journey and the Locavore badge, but all girls will be giving back to the community by providing fresh fruits and vegetables for residents in need.

First Aid/CPR

CVS Minute Clinic

Brownies and Juniors can complete a free workshop to earn their First Aid badge. Sharon Dimond with CVS Minute Clinic in Farragut will bring this workshop to troop meetings located in Athens, Cleveland, Farragut, Lenoir City, Loudon, and Sweetwater. Requires a minimum of 25 girls.

Hands On Heart CPR & First Aid

Hands On Heart CPR & First Aid offers Heartsaver CPR, AED, and first aid classes. Classes last 4-4.5 hours. Upon completion, participants will receive a Heartsaver First Aid and/or CPR AED course completion card that is valid for two years. Minimum 3 /Maximum 20. Dress comfortably, as participants will be practicing on mannequins on the floor. Classes are available by request for troop parents/volunteers or service units.

Northeast Tennessee Regional Health Office

Northeast Tennessee Regional Health Office offers first aid/CPR, healthy living, "The Readys!", and S.W.A.T. workshops for troops. This is only offered to Girl Scout troops in Carter, Greene, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Unicoi, and Washington Counties in Tennessee. See the flyer for contact information for each area

Life Skills

Creative Discovery Museum

The Creative Discovery Museum offers fun and unique overnights for Girl Scouts at the museum. Girls can also work on badges at overnights, just let museum staff know. The event includes dinner at the museum, time in the gift shop, games, badge requirements, and breakfast. Bring your own sleeping bag and pillow!

The Cutting Edge Classroom

From knife skills to delicious pizza and pretzels, the Cutting Edge Classroom will help teach Girl Scouts to be comfortable in the kitchen and learn lots of new cooking skills! Troops can also book private cooking classes.

Pink Diamond Defense

Pink Diamond Defense offers Girls on Guard, basic self-defense skills based instinctual movements to women and girls in an interactive and fun way. They also teach age-appropriate self-protection information on various topics to include bully defense, friendship drama, social media safety, healthy boundaries, predator awareness, dating safety, and sexual assault/domestic violence protection using every day scenarios Adults do not have to attend, but it is highly encouraged. No males are allowed in classes containing sexual content.

Prime Medical Training

Prime Medical Training offers a Child and Babysitting Safety program. This program provides the fundamentals of starting and running a babysitting business, proper supervision, basic caregiver skills, and interpersonal relationship skills with parents and children. Participants must be 11-15 years old. First aid and CPR certifications are strongly recommended prior to taking this course.

Safe Diva Defense

Self Diva Defense offers self-defense classes with optional situational awareness/non-lethal weapon training. The classes are based in the following principles: prepare, educate, empower, and protect. Minimum 3/Maximum 20. Classes are available by request for troop parents/volunteers or service units.

Sprouts Cooking

Sprouts Cooking offers badge workshops and cooking classes for Girl Scouts. Participants will roll up their sleeves and have hands-on cooking experience with real kitchen utensils. They will discover the importance of making healthy choices, taste their creations, and have fun!

ACE Adventure

When Girl Scouts book a guided adventure by March 31, 2017, they can receive 20 percent off. Discount applies to whitewater rafting, rock climbing and guided activities. A minimum of 8 people per group is required. Groups can book a visit for later in the year (past Mar. 31) and still receive the discount. Groups are responsible for adhering to Safety Activity Checkpoints for grade-level participation.

Cabela's in Fort Oglethorpe, GA. offers workshops and classes for Girl Scout outdoor enthusiasts, including archery, instruction on camping gear, and more. Chattanooga Zoo

Two-hour badge workshops led by knowledgeable and experiences staff are available by request. Badge workshops include What are Pets? for Brownies, Naturalist Gardener and Animals & Habitats for Juniors, Naturally Nocturnal for Cadettes, and Voice in Conservation for Seniors. Overnights are also available. Minimum of 8 girls required.

Five Oaks Stables

Five Oaks Stables teaches girls the basics of horseback riding, how to care for horses, and horse safety. Girls also enjoy horseback riding through the foothills of the Smokies. Juniors can earn their Horseback Riding badge. Chaperones are required. This is not a drop-off event.

The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center

The Heritage Center offers customized activities and tours for Girl Scouts. Girls may choose four different hands-on activities that revolve around the themes of archaeology, Native American history, and pioneer culture.  Scouts can shoot authentic Native American blow guns or throw a handmade Cherokee spear using an atlatl.  Girls can role play pioneer chores and play original pioneer games.  Girls can also have guided tours of the various galleries.

Hungry Mother Adventures Zip Line Tour 

Experience the longest, highest, and fastest zip line in Virginia at a special Girl Scout price! It’s nearly a mile of flying through tree tops and over valleys! There is some hiking involved, so proper footwear is required. All other equipment will be supplied. Dress appropriately for weather conditions. 

If troops would like to attend together, without parent/guardian, waivers will need to be completed, by parent/guardian, with a copy of the parent/guardian driver’s license.  This is required for all minor children that will be zip lining. Girl Scouts are responsible for adhering to Safety Activity Checkpoints for grade-level participation. Tour takes approximately 2–3 hours to complete. No concessions available. Portable restrooms on site.

Nantahala Outdoor Center

The Nantahala Outdoor Center offers rafting trips, overnight adventures, and group packages. Choose which river or activities meet the adventure goals of your group: French Broad, Nolichucky, Upper and Lower Pigeon, Nantahala, Ocoee, or Chattooga. Group packages are available for groups over 10 people, and include meals, lodging, and choice of exciting adventures!
Where: Spread across four states, NOC operates trips on eight different rivers and each of the rivers has a dedicated outpost.

Off the Grid Mountain Adventures

Race your friends and family on Off the Grid Mountain Adventures’ dual 60 MPH zipline! This 3,000-foot long and 300-foot high zipline is one of the longest in the country! Groups are responsible for adhering to Safety Activity Checkpoints for grade level participation.

Raccoon Mountain Caverns and Campground

Raccoon Mountain offers guided walking tours, 2–4+ hour Wild Cave Expedition tours (think mud, helmets, and flashlights!), panning for gems, and more. There are group campsites for tents and RVs, and even cabins for those not quite ready to rough it. Any visit to the Caverns will include education on geology, wildlife, cave conservation, and cave formation.

REI Knoxville

REI offers a wide variety of introductory and advanced in-store classes to the community that Girl Scouts are welcome to attend. Smoky Mountain Llama Trek

Smoky Mountain Llama Trek offers a variety of hikes through the Smokies with experienced guides and friendly, professionally-trained pack llamas. Girls can take a leisurely nature walk or an adventurous trek with their llama friends and learn all about their care.

Knoxville Ghost Tours

Dig into the science behind ghost hunting with a walking tour by Knoxville Ghost Tours. Girls will learn Knoxville history, work as a team, investigate using a variety of equipment, and come to their own conclusions based on the evidence you find! This is a non-scary patch program!  Join in on a popular public tour (Friday and Saturday nights) or schedule your own private tour (for up to 30 people).
Where: Downtown Knoxville
Price: $25 per girl/$30 per adult. Price includes a souvenir lanyard, use of investigation equipment, Ghost Hunting 101 crash course, and a nationally-recognized Ghost Hunter and local historian as your guides. Patches are available for $5 each; they’re free if your group is 10 people or more.

Three Rivers Rambler

The Three Rivers Rambler is available for private charter for a 90-minute route along the river. We have two engine options available: $1750 for a diesel train and $2750 for a steam locomotive, both options with seating up to 220 people.

Time Out Camp

Includes a guided tour of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, playtime, and organized activities on our interactive ball courts. There’s also a movie and popcorn for all! Program available June through August.

WonderWorks

WonderWorks offers discounts for groups that have a minimum of 10 Girl Scouts, that register in advance, and that have one person paying for the entire group. A participation patch is included with each admission. This "amusement park for the mind" includes more than 100 interactive exhibits.

Rocky Mount Museum - Woodworker badge

Earn your Woodworker badge at Rocky Mount State Historic Site. Examine the handiwork of hand-built historic log homes and learn many of the techniques of woodcraft used though the centuries. Each Girl Scout will make a finished woodworking project while learning the basics of carpentry. This program takes about three hours.
